Alum Rock Reviews
The cost of living is definitely affordable and as it is a busy street with access to many highways, the commute time is great. There is a hospital nearby and plazas with many diverse food and shopping options on McKee and Jackson. However, the area I live in are mostly condominiums, apartments, or town-homes which lack parking. Parking is mostly on the street, and combined with the types of establishments in the area (gas stations, auto-repairs, hospitals), it doesn't feel safe enough to walk around the neighborhood. I've gotten my car broken into twice, my car towed once, and almost daily I encounter homeless individuals or hear them yelling outside my window near the bus station. The area definitely has its pros and cons.
As when all towns grow into cities and into metropolises, there's the inevitable fact that crime will rise as people take their opportunity of anonymity and the crowd to steal, assault, deal, and etc. San Jose was once in the top 5 cities for lowest crime rate, and though it may be lower in the ranks, it is not a major concern. A vast majority of offenders for the violent crimes that may occur in this city are sadly people who suffer from addiction or mental illnesses that rapidly degrade their mental health and ability to act socially and nonviolently. This is simply an effect from America's poor mental health care system as a whole.
San Jose is a city I will always come back to. It's where all my friends are, and the community is vivid and vast. The Bay Area is a hotspot for clubs and concerts, and the food scene is incredible and fresh. So many things are within an hour or 2 hour drive with a price tag that isn't too outrageous. The sights are majorly beautiful, and hiking trails are a constant in this area.
