Albany Park Reviews
I've lived in Albany Park for about 18 years now. I had previously lived in Uptown and I much prefer living here than there. Albany Park is homey, so sometimes it's easy to become desensitized to what happens around us. Though Albany Park has become homey, I still wish to relocate my family to a safer neighborhood, in or out of state. I get tired of wondering whether the residents a few blocks down are playing with fireworks or if there's a turf war going on.
Albany Park is a very diverse neighborhood, composed mostly of south American, Asian, and Middle Eastern descendants. The members of this community live in very close proximity to one another, usually in an apartment building or complex. There are an abundant amount of small businesses within the neighborhood, all of which successfully express a piece of the community's culture. Unfortunately, one aspect of this neighborhood's culture is consistent gang activity. I hear the activities through whistles and gunshots. I see the members through black tinted SUVs and at street corners. Rerouting my walk home is a part of my routine in order to ensure my safety. I hope that the economics of this neighborhood can improve so those young men do not have to resort to violence. I hope my neighborhood can become more affluent without losing any of its diversity.
Like Chicago's reputation, there is a lot of gang violence within Albany Park. It is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. In Chicago diversity influences violence. Many of Chicago gangs are based off of race and ethnicity, when together rises competition and heat-referring to the street term when a block is hot there is a lot of tension, attention, people, police, drug dealing and violence. There are forests, natural habitats preservatives throughout the community. Though there is death and drugs lurking there is still community. Just in the distance of your nearest park you meet people from all over the world. You got beauty in this. The people, natural preservatives, native birds and the occasional deer or three. Theses are the mixed things that give this community its identity. Albany park is so Chicago like. To have cultural and violence all in one block. That’s Chicago, that’s Albany park.
