I've lived all over the east valley of Phoenix, and Ahwatukee is my favorite neighborhood. It's a small neighborhood that became really popular in the 90's. It is family friendly while also being great for young adults. The I-10 makes it easy to get anywhere in the valley quickly and the loop 202 expansion will make it even easier when it's finished. The massive South Mountain Reserve is a great spot for year-round hiking and it doesn't get insanely busy like Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale. The houses are on the older side (for Phoenix at least) and you get less bang for your buck than in other suburbs like Gilbert, but it is still an awesome place to live.
