It has a nostalgic American feel, where children walk/bike to school, neighbors leave doors open and pride in the community is second to none. Everyone genuinely cares about the town. So many students play musical instruments and the sports teams are stellar. The beautiful beaches and lakes make it a staycation everyday of the summer! Some of the state's best hiking trails are within the town's borders. They even have ice skating at the cove in the winter. Restaurants and entertainment are nearby as the town is just off of routes 80, 46 and 287. Schools are top notch, because - like many top private prep schools - they focus on the core foundations - reading, writing and 'rithmatic. The town deserves a much higher diversity score since there are many residents from all continents who relocate here for work. I've met Dutch, Danish, Chinese, Indian, Russian, German, English, Irish, French, Peruvian and other Latino natives, who chose Mountain Lakes when their jobs relocated to the US.
You’ll wish you grew up here! Luckily, I did, and moved back to raise our children. So many Lakers who grew up here have moved back here the past few years because they appreciate the wonderful community, top schools, great recreation with many lakes and hiking! It’s a real testament to our town. So easy to make friends here. I love the history of the town too. The town celebrates the history and is protective of the charm and natural setting.
Safe, charming, well-maintained community with excellent schools and beautiful lakes, trails, and wooded areas. Residents of Mountain Lakes take pride in their community and are neighborly to one another. Our police force proactively participates in the community and is appreciated by Mountain Lakes citizens. The borough is almost a throwback to gentler, kinder times where pride of place meant something and community members came together to help one another and to celebrate good things in life.
