My partners and I just moved to Mount Vernon a few months ago (as of my typing this), and it has turned out to be a real dream town! The combination of small town and college town vibes are perfectly balanced, creating an environment that is welcoming to newcomers, conducive to creators, and protective of its citizens. Having Cornell College just down the street is a never-ending source of inspiration and joy, bringing in new face and fresh ideas every year. The city takes great pride in its many landmarks, and its people strive to honor its roots. The stores and restaurants are all absolutely delightful to visit, and there are a plethora of events from farmer's markets to chalk festivals to bring people together any time of the year. The only place it falls short is in affordability, but even as costly as it is, Mount Vernon absolutely belongs at the top of the list of greatest places to live in Iowa.
This town is full of kind people and full of diversity (at least on the Cornell Campus). With my time here (as a college freshman) I have found that the towns people are nice and welcoming, the neighborhoods feel safe, and I actually want to move here in the future. I would also like to mention that the entire town as well as college are very excepting and respectful towards everyone (LGBTQ+, POC, etc.).
Great small town with local events throughout the year. A warm and welcoming community. It's a good sign to meet so many families who grew up here and have moved back after college and work in order to raise their children. I've enjoyed the bars, the local affordable movie theater, the Sing-a-long Bar and the great BBQ with its own house-made craft beer.
