I am a 68 year old lifelong resident of Mt Vernon. It is definitely on the decline and has been since the 1970s. The only jobs the city attracts are minimum wage service jobs. Everything is geared toward getting people to stop and spend dollars at the restaurants, motels, and stores on the interchange. The south side and east sides of town look like a war zone. The schools are terrible with the exception of Summersville and Rome grade schools. Mt. Vernon is ranked the most dangerous city in Illinois by Roadsnacks.com and the Bloomingtin Pantagraph, and is among the top 10 most dangerous cities in most other polls. The downtown area is unattractive, and the athletic teams are either awful or mediocre. The only real positive is that there is a relatively peaceful interracial coexitence. We get along pretty well. But if you're white and a stranger, I wouldn't venture south of Broadway east of 24th street. The city and public school admimistrations are corrupt. I would go somewhere else.
Mount Vernon is an interesting place. I have lived here my entire life and I can honestly say that I have watched the town grow. Mount Vernon has not always been the greatest place to live. However, in recent years, the town has been on the ups. Recently, the town has started to add more restaurants, shopping places, and hotels. It has become a better stopping place for travelers and for families that live in the area. In addition to new places being added, a lot of old, rundown, and trashy buildings in the town have been torn down. Since those buildings have been destroyed, the appearance of the town has improved heavily.
I have been looking in the general area to purchase a home, however I am concerned when I see 4 and 5 homes on the same road up for sale. Underpriced for what they have to offer and the taxes are very steep. I see more cons then pros in hours of searching in local news and reputable internet information. Every town has its problems and I understand that but I don’t want to lose equity or down the line in 5 to 10 years not be able to sell the home without a loss. Love the area, but apprehensive of their current growth problems.
