the town has no confidence in its citizens' literacy levels; they don't even bother to up street signs. which is strange, because the local schools are pretty good. you'd think the ability to read would be taken for granted.

if you're in Mt. Carmel, the best way to find out where you are at any given time, is to locate one of the plentiful documents which have been taped to many of the front doors in town.

as a courtesy to lost travelers trying to find their way in Mt. Carmel, the town tax collectors and banks have teamed up to tape up lots of notices of foreclosure or condemnation of properties, which list the property's address at the very top of the document. water and electric companies have also joined in the effort, taping colourful notices of service shut-off onto front doors throughout the town. these too list the property address.

relying on these plentiful notices is the most reliable way of determining one's whereabouts while in Mt. Carmel.

Mount Carmel like any town has its flaws, there is not much here in terms of activities, night life, or restaurants. But it has access within a half hour to 40 minutes to several towns that offer it. Mount Carmel is a sweet little coal town that is a quiet place to raise a family, and have a starting point for first time home buyers to get their foot in the market at a reasonable cost. Out of many towns I've lived in PA, it is a good place to start.
There isn’t much to do in the town but the town is very tight knit. So generally most families know each other. The town is slowly deteriorating but the families who are originally from here try and improve it. In certain parts it is a little dangerous to be alone at night but they supply good first time jobs. Have nice places to eat on Oak Street such as Hollywood Pizza and Schicky’s. They have a library, a notary shop, a second hand store and multiple banks and churches.
