This is a town with great infrastructure and a lot of potential, but it is underdeveloped. People complain about the demographics, but it is very diverse, which is good. The schools are diverse as well, although there are complaints about the quality of education.
Monticello is a small town located in Upstate New York, about an hour and a half from New York City. Due to its proximity to the Catskill Mountains, the Monticello area has become a popular tourist destination for weekend visits and summertime rentals. Unlike many areas in Upstate New York, Monticello and the surrounding townships feature a great array of human diversity: from the locals and suburbanites to immigrants from all around the world. Despite its allure for tourists, Monticello is also considered a very poor town which has high rates of poverty, few good-paying, full-time jobs, and limited opportunities for its residents. Currently, a town beautification project has been underway as the area prepares for the opening of the new Montreign Casino. As a local, I hope that this brings more commerce and opportunity to an area that desperately needs it.
I like monticello. My niece and i travel at night to the casino and never see all this crime or cop cars with flashing lights. I have lived in the bronx for most of my 58 years and am thinking of moving up there. I pay more in rent here then if i had a mortgage in monticello in a brand new home. There are clean places to eat and close by plus lakes and hiking trails near by. The residents have been nothing but kind. Small town parades, farmers market, kite festivals, garlic fest. Bird clubs. If you are looking to party and get drunk, please stay away.
