Monterey is a small town of 3500. We are at a 2,000 ft elevation. Our summers are mile and usually cool because we are on the Cumberland Plateau. The city is currently extending our water and sewer services which will open commercial building opportunities close to I-40 exit 300. We are desperately in need of more business and job opportunities. We are more of a bedroom community. WE have recently added to our tourism opportunities. Our employment opportunities are very limited. We are 13 miles from Cookeville the county seat. which is the hub of the Upper Cumberland. Monterey is a great place to retire.
Its a small town and most everyone is very nice! As with all town's there are areas and people to avoid. There is not a lot to do, unfortunately. However, its very peaceful and comfortable.
I have lived here most of my life. Taught school for 37 years and retired. Monterey is a laid back community of 3,000 population. We are a family oriented community. Our biggest drawback is lack of employment opportunities and very little night life. We only have two grocery stores along with Dollar General and Family Dollar. Most department stores are about 15 miles away.
