12 miles West of Manhattan, this city has been a NJ beacon for decades. It has energy, beauty, diversity in its population, a better-than-average school system, 6 business districts and 6 Midtown Direct train stations to the City, gorgeous parks and playgrounds, lots of places to eat, shop and stroll, kid-friendly activities and camps, access to great medical and a deep commitment to the arts. About the only think it lacks is consistent parking options! It's also just about an hour from the Jersey shore, which is great in the summer.
Montclair, NJ appears to be a nice town but what lies beneath is bigotry, racial profiling, and rude people. Walking the streets remind you of walking on the UES where people refuse to share the sidewalks, react to people that do not look like them adversely, and the police racially profile the diverse population.
The housing options are overpriced for building built in the 1900 that lack proper insulation, which results in neighbor conflict because even being mindful the smallest sounds travel from floor to floor.
While the towns has signs that say "Stigma Free" this only applies to the white LGBTQ community. If you a person of a diverse background be prepared to be followed by the cops. Neighbors contact the police and report you as suspicious person. The cops ride around target policing but meanwhile there is a large population of visible addicted persons roaming the streets.
Neighbors do not speak to other neighbors unless they believe you have something to offer.

I love Montclair. I’ve lived in montclair all my life and I had a great childhood. I went to edgemont elementary school and enjoyed my time there very much as a kid. Then I went to Mt. Hebron for middle school. I learned so much and grew as a person so much in middle school. My montclair community has always supported me in every aspect. They have given me a place to thrive. The food is great all over town and there’s always somewhere nice to sit and eat. Recently there’s been a lot of construction going on in the town to parking has been a mess but other then that Montclair is amazing!
