Monroe's greatest asset lies with a group of residents working to improve the city's development policies. I've heard that Monroe schools are inferior yet some of my friends' children graduated from Monroe High School and went on to succeed at selective colleges both public and private. We live on the outskirts of Monroe and our neighborhood has a low crime rate. That cannot be said of Monroe in general and I would not risk raising kids here. My political leanings are liberal and Monroe is the birthplace of Jesse Helms and a meeting place for The Proud Boys. Enough said. NC does not have legislation in place to protect companion animals. Witnessing the consequences is sickening. But the efforts of local advocacy groups are impressive. The growth rate of housing developments has of late been rapid and seemingly chaotic. Housing prices seem to be soaring while 3 years ago we were able to buy a large house in a lovely neighborhood for a low price unimaginable elsewhere.
Monroe is a small town but big enough that there is somewhat of a variety of things to do around here. But, when you want to do something with your friends, all there is to do is walk around the same two shopping strips, movies, or go get food. Monroe is a nice place, just a small town that is a combination of country and suburbs.
I love the city I've grown up in, specifically the small town of Unionville. If I could say anything about Unionville, I would say raise your kids here! The hospitality and small town feel, in my experience, while growing up is like no other. Unionville Elementary is also no doubt the best elementary school EVER! I loved my schooling experience and never would've wanted to live anywhere other than in Unionville. Monroe however, has seemed to deteriorate, and while I absolutely love the place I live, I think we need to come together and make our city a better place.
