The western suburb of Glen Ellyn is ideal. It has a small city feel although you can be downtown Chicago in an hour or less (depending on time of day and whether you train-in or drive). You benefit from the diversity of the area - diversity of thought w/great schools for all ages, theaters, museum, and music options, diversity of background w/great dining and shopping options, and diversity of religion w/many options for those looking to connect with a religious community. And, although the area attracts new people from all over the world, you can still meet families living here who grew up in the same area. My neighbors are fabulous. More than once, I've woken up after a night of heavy snow to find my sidewalk AND DRIVEWAY plowed by an anonymous neighbor.

I feel extremely safe in my home.I do lock all of my doors when I go to bed, but there were a few nights we mistakenly left a garage door open overnight and nothing happened (except we got a note from the police saying "For safety and security reasons, please don't leave your garage door open." There's an elementary school in my subdivision and the kids all walk to school. I feel safe walking/jogging at all hours alone. Of course in 14 years I've heard of a couple incidents where a car was vandalized or there was a home break-in, but it's been the result of a naughty teen or some other drama - not anything random that would imply a crime problem in the area. There's a big group on Facebook and they are extremely aware of activity and communicate a lot about any suspicious comings and goings in the subdivision.
I enjoy living in Lombard, Illinois. I live in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. My neighbors are friendly and many stores are close by. I am 30 minutes from the city of Chicago and I can easily drive or hop on the Metra. I have lived in Lombard all my life (18 yrs) and cant compare it. I have visited NYC and I love it. I do love Chicago as well, the city life and fast pace. I can say that in the future I can see myself living in Chicago Illinois or NYC because of the night life and cultures.
