This is a very safe community, and the complicated network of little streets keeps it that way. However, many roads have no sidewalks, even though that's changing for the better! Also, many streets lack proper lighting. This creates the potential for life-threatening situations, especially at night and with reduced visibility.

Mercer Island is a really great place for families and fun!! The neighborhoods are safe and there are plenty of dog friendly parks. There is a park and ride to the north so you can drive, park your car there, and then hop on the bus to go to downtown seattle or bellevue without worrying about parking. The public schools are also top notch!! Your kids will be getting the best education with great teachers! Of course there is a price to pay for all of these great things, which is the cost of housing, a lot higher than regular housing in a suburban area.
Mercer Island is a quiet and clean city that is in the best location to commute to and from the Seattle or Bellevue neighborhood. They have a Walgreen's that is open even during some holidays and they have a QFC that sells bus passes. There is also a bus stop that has buses coming in from both Seattle and Bellevue. One downside is, their banks are sometimes closed on weekends and there are not a lot of things to do. This includes restaurants and different activities. Most houses are in the millions range as it is a more wealthy neighborhood, and the schools consist of mainly White with almost no African Americans or Asians (no diversity). The library has high technology but is a little limited on books, but has a nice welcoming interior. Overall, it is a decent city for those who enjoy the quiet and safety it provides.
