The sense of community is outstanding! People readily come together to support one another. Many people who were originally from the area stay for most of their lives while people who move to the area usually only stay for a few years. The community is pretty family and pet friendly, although there could be more community events. However, engagement in community events is wonderful.
I would live here again if I could do it all over. I love the having such strong community support during both times of hardship and celebration, educators who invest a lot of their time and energy into teaching their students, and the beautiful historic buildings and trees that line the streets in town. However, compared to the rest of the country, this is a somewhat poor area in which school budget cuts have had to be made and the availability and variety of jobs has decreased within the last fifty years. I'm hopeful that more industrial jobs will return to the area, which will draw in more people and bring in families who will send their children to the local school.
The housing in this area is not always of good quality. Many houses in town are in poor shape, especially rental houses. There are some vacant and abandoned properties, and the housing and utilities aren't too expensive (perhaps due to the quality of the housing). The best areas in this residence areas are near the outskirts of town and the worst areas are in the middle.
