Mathis is, like other towns, a sleepy little place. It has not much for it in the ways of fun, but the community is tight knit and watches out of one another. Life here is simple, calm, sometimes loud when a train passes through. And whatever you do, don't get stuck behind a train as they pass through to Corpus Christi. You will be stuck there a long, long time. One of the beautiful things about Mathis, truly, is it's river and lake. But if you should take a boat to it, watch out of the tree stumps left from years past. The Mathis lake is a artificial lake. And although the water is clean, a forest used to exist there. Now only existing as cut stumps that could any boats integrity. Indeed, it takes a bit of knowledge to successful travel through the lake, but that difficulty sure does make the fishing all the greater.

The town itself feels rather western like, existing as almost a single road lined with buildings, but is ever expanding outward from that road at a moderate pace.

I have lived in Mathis for almost 12 years and it has been great. Mathis isn't such a big city with a thousands of things to do but it has potential. But the good thing about Mathis is that it is very quiet during the day and night but the not so good thing is that you can easily get bored because there isn't much to do. I can honestly say this little town has grown and it will always hold a special place in my heart because I practically lived here my entire life, and it has always been home. But a few things this town needs is more shopping stores, better roads and more fun things to do.
Mathis is a very amazing small town. Good food, friendly people, great school, one of the best in Texas actually. Not to big but a good size town.
