Mastic Beach is a complicated little town. It has a bad name because of the low income status and the drugs that moved through the Indian reservation. It does in fact have it's problems, but so does everywhere else. It is a wonderful town though, filled with a lot of history and beautiful scenery! William Floyd, one of the declaration of Independence signers, has a gorgeous estate hidden inside. Many in the community join together to make it better through neighborhood watch groups, monthly community clean-ups, monthly community safety meetings, many local free events for the lower income children to have experiences, and so many more things. I do not even need to mention the gorgeous beach, Smiths point, located on Fire Island just outside. Like I said, Mastic Beach is a complicated little town, but with the community working together the way they do it should get better soon!
BUY HERE! The sewage issue is being resolved, properties are cheap land is becoming available. Yes, it is low income, a drug problem and worst of all litter, but investors/buyers can combat that problem by taking a stake in a beachfront community. Once the values go up the bad element currently renting will seek out more affordable housing elsewhere.
We've been living here for a while now. No complaints. The school district is great and the neighbors always offer to help when you're doing yard works or working on anything. Many of the major stores are within a 20 or less driving distance. So far, I will recommend this town to anyone.
