Mason City needs to work on maintaining and keeping business in town instead of constantly losing business. The community here could be a lot better than it is as well.
I lived there my whole life and everyone is a little dramatic when it comes to the flaws of the town. Everyplace has flaws. I think Mason is the perfect combination of big city but still local. It has events for all ages going on all year long but especially in the summer. There isn't much crime and most people are nice.
A growing community with a dedicated drive for revitalization of this moderate sized town.
Mason City residents enjoy the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright's refurbished downtown building - now a hotel.
Their has been a concerted effort to draw the community together through art festivals, the farmer's market, and other family events.

Some of the mason city police are disrespectful and not very understanding. Mostly entitled or just don’t care.
Living in Mason City is great. The weather during the summer is probably one of my favorite things. There a beautiful nature trails to walk on and see the beautiful scenery. There are many family owned businesses that you can support. I've always lived here and there a new and beautiful things I see everyday.
Lots of business closing and run down. The mall is trying to be revamped. New ice arena. Schools are average. Some nice neighborhoods and some run down places.
I moved to Mason City when I was six months old so it is all I’ve ever known. It’s been a great place to grow up.
Great place to live for families, City council focusing on the wrong ideas. Not enough places for children to have fun. Taffic is good
Mason City has lots of beautiful things to see around town and has a lot to offer. I do believe it needs more for high school students and college students to do considering it is a "college town".
I recently moved here with my partner, and we are not fans. For one, it is difficult to sleep through the night as trains pass through the whole city and are sounding their horns throughout the night. It will be awhile before they create quiet zones to help, if they ever finish. Secondly, it is very trashy. Every day someone throws their trash into our yeard. It can be wine bottles or fast food bags and cups, beer cans, all of it. I have seen someone drive by & throw something into our yard!
Finally, it is not very dog-friendly. There is 1 dog park that is always empty and no businesses in Mason City or the neighboring city Clear Lake allow dogs (except for one great brewery). Also, the beach in Clear Lake is not that great, it is mostly private property. Clear Lake next door does have a lot more things to do, but I would suggest maybe looking elsewhere to live, just to avoid the train horns alone!

Kind of started getting bad. Dirty and too much construction, crime has gone up as well. People are rude and not as nice as they used to be.
Mason City is a decent sized town that has a small town feel, yet has some big town stores and restaurant. I would still appreciate some more stores coming to town though!
Mason City is a small town that has always been small. The local government seems to want to keep it that way. There have been numerous companies that have tried to locate to this town but have been shut out. There are plenty of jobs for the unskilled worker. The selection of restaurants is fabulous. However, the array of shopping choices is nearly nil.
I would like to see less crime rate. Mason City is a great community, with great opportunity. There's many things for families to do in this area.
Mason City had been trying to make so many aesthetically pleasing changes to their downtown area. It looks very nice, but in my opinion they need to remember the rest of the city, not just the part the visitors come to. I would warn any visitors not to travel too far off the beaten path because if you turn the wrong corner you could end up in a not so pleasant neighborhood.
Mason City is essentially a retirement community. We literally have magnified our street signs so the older folk can navigate easier. We are very cookie cutter, have limited night life and things to do as far as attracting younger people, and we're forever known as "River City" or the place where Frank Lloyd Wright built some houses and a hotel and then fled from town. We have a great art and music culture and local shops, but we could definitely expand and appeal more to our visitors instead of building more banks, car dealerships, and hotels.
I think Mason city is good middle size town. It is convenience and safe residential town. The only thing I wish is the mall can have a few more stores in it, most of the stores have moved out the mall, it is really kind of waste such a good resource.
