Working in Marion
I had the "pleasure" of visiting Marion during a trip to southern Illinois. The town is in the heart of the Illinois Coal Country, but also the Bible Belt. The town seems like the type that instantly turns on you when they don't see you in church on Sunday. The air is judgemental and they silently let you know.
Marion is a very religious and conservative area. Geographically you might not be in the south, but culturally you are. The people speak with southern accents, support racists tendencies, and are die hard Trump supporters. They are all about coal mining and are not environmentally friendly. Now, obviously, this doesn't describe 100% of the population, just a majority. It's also unbearably hot and humid in the summer. We are currently in a week long heat wave where heat indices are over 100 degrees every day. A couple days ago it was 117. The food is also terrible. What they consider good food here is mediocre at best. Land is also incredibly expensive. They nickle and dime you on everything. It is a very pretty place there farther south you go. You are near a large national forest and several lakes. The outdoor rec opportunities are better down here than the rest of the state.
I recently moved to Route 37 in Marion, Illinois, in August of 2016. I live about 4 miles North of town. I absolutely love the country feel. My boyfriend and I are first time homeowners. We enjoy being able to do as we please in our yard, shoot guns, ride four wheelers, or side by sides, play with out pets. It is a great atmosphere!
