I have been a resident of LBK since 2007. It is a beautiful place to live. Due to this, however, it is becoming very developed and a popular tourist destination. Thus, traffic is terrible during season and the lush environment is growing sparse. Yet it is still incredibly safe. LBK offers numerous recreational activities for residents and the beach is always stunning.

Longboat Key is a great place to go to the beach, but only an alright place to live. There's insane seasonal traffic and really not much to do on the island itself, other than your basic public amenities (beaches, a few parks). Everybody is white and elderly, and a massive chunk of the population only lives there part-time.
Sarasota contains numerous independent shops that do sell anything that you might need. There also numerous mom-and-pop shops that sell very unique items, such as the arts and crafts store, Blue Line. It also has all the big company stores you can think of. Overall, Sarasota's local business scene is quite superb.
