In my opinion: Do not waste your time with Lawton. Local government does not embrace change or competition. The result of this is a very narrow minded community. The job market is horrible. Housing and neighborhood is run down. Schools are horrible. The mindset of locals (not military) is very poor. No shopping, nothing to do, eating places are limited to fast food. Golden corral and Applebee's are high end around here. ETC. Simply put, it is a community that has gotten used to the military and Goodyear. There is no attempt to excel as a community at anything. I grew up in Lawton when my dad was stationed here. I came back here after my military career to help with my aging parents. I can honestly say that seeing the direction Lawton has gone over the years and where it is headed is not a place I want to spend any more time than necessary. It is a shame. Lawton could be so much more if the powers to be weren't so greedy!
Lawton started off good back then from what the older generation has said, but it has gone downhill. There is not much for older kids to do. A lot of athletes do not want to stay in this town because there are barely opportunities here. Most leave for college in the city or other states because they are tired of the gun and drug abuse here. Lawton can be better if people actually cared about the town they once talked about before.
The place is amazing. I was able to make new friends, graduate from an amazing high school of Lawton High, and try new food. When I started Lawton, I was a little nervous because we moved from Kentucky a few years ago since we are a military family and my dad works in the Army. Once we settled in, our lives changed. The people were really nice, the schools were excellent, and there were many places to go. There were so many that we bought a house to live near the places. It is a great place to be and people should come visit.
