Laurel is a good city to live in and is overall safe. It is quiet, compact, and not too far from other areas I frequent such as College Park, Bowie, and Anne Arundel. Moving here from Washington D.C I found that it isn’t as busy and functions at a much slower pace. Although Laurel doesn’t have as many entertainment option(s) as larger cities, I like that the grocery stores, small scale plazas, and malls are all close in proximity to where we live. Laurel also has good recreational parks and walking/hiking trails nearby.
Laurel is an okay place to live. Having lived in other suburbs in other areas of the U.S, I would say it’s just okay by comparison. Here are the two best things about Laurel. Laurel is close to several highways that easily take you into other cities in Maryland and DC. You are 30 minutes to everywhere. Next, there are many stores here very close to wear you live. Compared to New York (NYC and Long Island) and Florida where I’ve lived, Maryland is very woodsy and has many thickets. Compared to other areas in Maryland, Laurel is the most built up, with stores, other businesses and houses, as far as the eyes can see. Laurel is also very diverse. The things I don’t like about Laurel are, it’s not particularly beautiful and the customer service is lacking at times (particularly in South Laurel). Also, there are no real parks here. And it’s a bit boring. For now it’s okay. But I would not put down roots here.
I've lived in Laurel my whole life. The schools are quite good, and they have surprisingly great restaurants. It's a quiet, suburban lifestyle so it's good for raising kids or starting out. There just is not much of note, or of interest in the city. It's know for the Laurel Racetrack, which is good if you like horse racing or gambling. There's also Fairland aquatics, a rather good fitness center. A poor gym, but great tennis courts, swimming pools, a gymnasium (for gymnastics), and a trail. That's pretty much it. My favorite thing about the city is a roller skating rink. It's a little run down, but it's where I spent a lot of my childhood and it's a great way to spend a weekend evening. There are a lot of auto shops, a lot of industrial things, and overall a pretty bland place.
