Though this small town in Wyoming may easily be looked over as any other forgettable town that isn't on the east or west coast, it is a truly a marvelous place. Nestled near the foothills of the Wind River Range, and Sinks Canyon, residents have as their backyard the greatest limestone rock climbing in the world, hikes, and incredible geological features. The community is strong, hearty, and sticks together. Though you can see the obvious tensions between the generations as our culture becomes more and more politically polarized, but for the most part, Lander is still relatively libertarian/conservative. The health care can most certainly be better, just ask any resident. The education is great here, we have a fantastic liberal arts school with teachers from all around the world, NOLS, a Montessori school, and a fantastic public school. Housing is difficult to come by, and it is a big issue for Lander, since many people want to move to Lander, but cannot find a place to stay.
Lander, WY is noisy. First responder agencies in town run sirens on almost every call. Multiple tornado sirens around town are used to notify firefighters of fire callouts and are wake-the-dead loud. This is almost daily. If only a few firefighters respond to the station, it is set off again. They are loud because they are 'tornado' sirens not pagers. There are firefighter response apps that the city or fire district could invest in that are useful, such as 'I am responding.' And, there is a rodeo every Saturday night in the summer with music blasted until midnight. Same thing with fourth of July, the fireworks show goes until midnight and it sounds like a war zone. This is a small rural town, not a metropolitan area. The town needs to do a noise study/survey, with community input, and manage this better. Lander is not a peaceful place.
Cost of living is outrageous, housing is over Inflated. Cant get a decent meal here to save your life. No (decent) jobs with out a degree. Crime is actually high had 2 shootings in 3 weeks not far from my house. Had my Lexus's window smashed out by my house whiled parked on the street. I make$21 an hour and that's considered a fantastic job by lander standards
