Lake Ronkonkoma NY is considered a middle class neighborhood, where adult occupations range from police officers, teachers, healthcare workers and construction. There are no distinctions where " you are from this area and are this way or look down on someone from that area". Growing up here afforded me the opportunity to participate in extra curricular activities while I attended school. I was able to play sports, have an after school job, and taking lessons for the band. I attended a very large school district that offered a competitive academic schedule which made me work hard . I believe this combination made me a well rounded individual. My parents firmly believe there is more to life than sports when my focus was on playing hockey in college. In my neighborhood student volunteering is a strong component to school credits. I volunteered at a camp for children with disabilities and it changed my hockey focus to now occupational therapy with this population.
I have recently moved to Lake Ronkonkoma in the last few months and so far I do not have many complaints. Travel wise there are plenty of public transportation choices close to my area, plenty of stores and restaurants and the neighborhood has been quiet and safe. I definitely plan on living here for the foreseeable future.
Lake Ronkonkoma is a neighborhood where blue collar workers to professionals in Law and Medicine reside. It is known for a Lake where in the 1950's was a resort and visitors from NYC and New England would vacation. Unfortunately this is not the case anymore. The pollution rate, in the last several years, has affected the Lake where swimming is banned. It's beautiful. LRIG ( Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement Group) and Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Association are trying to restore it. My family are members of both groups. We aren't an affluent community, local businesses are our mainstay . Raynor Park houses the Michael Murphy Memorial. He was a Navy Seal who lost his life in Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal of Honor. We are proud to memorialize this native and give thanks.
