Lake Charles is a great southern small city that is filled with history and charm! The people here are kind and neighborly, the city is not too big and not too small, and there's always local events going on. Lake Charles has several restaurants, a shopping mall, three casinos, and two major event centers. There are rodeos, livestock shows, flea market events, Mardi Gras events, and several expo events year-round. Several parks can be enjoyed as well -- dog parks, suburban parks, and natural parks/conservation wetland areas! The Boardwalk in the downtown area hosts several events throughout the year: fairs, running events, horse carriage rides/tours, boating events, Christmas displays, etc. Lake Charles is a quaint happening little city in SW Louisiana!
Lake Charles is overall fun if you have friends with the right things to do but there is still no places to go. There is majority food places that aren't even good they keep building the same places over and over again. We need more entertainment places after hurricane Laura this place does not feel like home. But, we still love the place we live in!
Ive been living in Lake Charles since 2011. There is a lot of room for improvement. The roads are horrible and ridden with potholes. In fact, expect there to be regular traffic on I10 west every weekend.
The city is very segregated and expensive in a lot of areas. There are very bad parts with high crime rates.
Since I’ve been here, the crime rate has risen noticeably. Some bad areas are 5th avenue, highway 14, and areas located around the mall. The rent has increased and is difficult to find an affordable apartment due to storm damages and housing demand.
If you are looking for a job, chances are you will end up working retail/service industry, the casinos, plants, or the hospitals. There aren’t many good jobs unless you know someone.
The city’s drainage is a serious problems, so expect there to be flooding every year. There are times when I like the city but after living here I often want to move away.
And 6 months out of the year, you have to worry about hurricanes.
