Be careful walking down by the Bart station, especially after dark. Lots of zombie sketch dawgs shuffle off the train looking for a quick score, bum-doh-minium shanties line the creekbeeds and break into cars and unlocked garages. Rents are cheap for such a good school district, but everyone knows who the apartment dweller kids are, so they’re pretty alienated. Lots of neglected rich kids with drug problems slum it with the downtown latchkey kids, but the latter will never be accepted into the networks that open doors for kids who grow up in real houses. Condo owners are also second class citizens in the social pecking order. My parents say our neighbor is actually a multimillionaire who just prefers townhouse living, and his family are outcast even though he’s a really nice guy, but people in town think he’s only worth a few hundred thousand so they exclude his family.
Lafayette is a wonderful place to live, excellent schools, thriving downtown with lots of great restaurant's. It is very much a family town with a strong sense of community. Close to perfect climate as you can get. Easy commute to SF, by BART or car. Excellent trails and hiking close by. Easy to get to Napa, Livermore, Russian River Valley, Tahoe and so much more. A lot of young families move here for the schools and relatively safe environment. Over all you will be hard pushed to find a better town. I picked Lafayette from the map of America when I moved from Ireland and over all I could not be happier.
I never lived in lafayette but I went to school in that city since I was 7 years old. Being Caucasian IN SUCH A WHITE RICH community was tough at times. Yes I made a few friends in my grade school through high school years but overall, people there are not as welcoming and open to outsiders and newcomers especially if you don't live there. Academics are excellent but extracurriculars have their flaws- a lot of favoritism and too much pressure within the children. Parents tend to be too competitive and hard on their children. You definitely learn to be discipline for SURE from challenging academics and the athletic programs there would make your children active but I think adults need to relax a bit towards their children. Let your children grow as people and let them enjoy their childhood. Time flies too fast.
