James Island is perfectly situated between Folly Beach and downtown Charleston. There is a lot of island pride here! We are surrounded by great schools, hospitals and restaurants. The smell of sea and flowers blooming is intoxicating here... The weather is gorgeous! Summer is hot and humid. Winter lasts only 2 months, January and February. Living here is like stepping back in time with history all around. It is a safe, family friendly place. My family and I love living here! JI is a more conservative area of Charleston with many churches and conservative values that make it a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Everyone looks out for each other and I often walk with a neighbor in my neighborhood after dark and feel safe. If you love God, the wonder of nature, exploring downtown, learning about history, enjoying the sea and being a thoughtful neighbor then James Island is the place for you!

I have lived on James Island twice. One of my kids attended James Island Charter High School. I thought the school was great! Her teachers were attentive and so were the administration. There was a rough element of kids that went to school there though. I'll put it this way. If you take advantage of the good things that school has to offer and you're an attentive parent, you'll get great results. The traffic in the summer is horrendous. Actually traffic is bad all times of the year. Housing is expensive, but that is true of everywhere in Charleston. The traffic is getting worse by the day and I've lived in Chicago, NYC, Pittsburgh, LA, etc. And there is something indefinable...none of my family can put a finger on it. The quality of life in Charleston, just isn't there anymore. I have dozens of friends that are leaving too. It's a great place to visit and that is what we will do...but never live there again.
We moved to JI 6 years ago from California and love it here. Charleston is such a fantastic town. We love living so close to Folly Beach and downtown. Our kids love it here and have made friends. If we ever move, I’ll be sad, but we don’t plan to. The only drawback is it’s expensive to live in Charleston. Even though we were used to high costs because we lived in Cali, we never could have afforded a home close to the beach there. Here, we can!
