Jacksonville is a small town that is overpopulated with military members. It is tough to find a resident of Jacksonville that does not have an affiliated military member in their household. I identify as a Disabled Marine Corps Veteran and am the spouse of a Disabled Marine Corps Retiree. The town of Jacksonville could use expanding as traffic is always ongoing. The town tries its best to make it accommodating for the service members and their families and there are also nearby cities to explore as well. Not to mention, we're right on the coast of NC, so unlimited beach access!
My family and I lived in Jacksonville from 2007 to 2011 and returned last year 2022 (living in CT from 2014 to 2022 where we’re from). The military base Camp Lejeune is literally next door to us, most military families who don’t live on base live in Jacksonville. There’s diversity because of the base for sure. The cost of living here is doable compared to everywhere else nowadays. The people are so nice and respectful (love the southern hospitality). We are approximately 30 minutes from the beach and the weather is great! I would love for there to be more for children and teenagers to do and more agencies like the YMCA, etc, along with a more diverse night life for adults. The pay for many professions and jobs are lower than the average and needs to improve overall (to match the cost of living increase).
Jacksonville is located near Camp Lejeune and houses many current and retired military people. Coming from a larger and more urban area, moving to Jacksonville was a bit of a downgrade in terms of things to do and places to go. The area itself is still pretty diverse with their international food trail but lacks options like korean barbecue, hot pot, Trader Joe's, Crumbl, etc. When I do Amazon returns, I have to go to Kohl's because there are no UPS stores within reasonable distance. If you needed these stores, the closest city you could go to is Wilmington, which is about an hour drive away, so definitely manageable but not ideal for running basic errands. Even though the town is near a military base, there are still some areas where crime is a concern, particularly as you move farther away from Western Blvd. Aside from current service members, Jacksonville is great for people looking to settle down into a quaint area with a decent amount of options and activities, like axe-throwing.
