I have been here for about 6 weeks now and the community is just amazing. Great events occur to bring everyone together. Great selection of restaurants although a thai and indian food restaurant is lacking but you can just drive to lansing or ann arbor for those foods. I am unsure of the local schools but the transportation seems okay. lots of pet friendly places to walk and hang out. Very excited or the annual jackson county fair!
There's aren't many good jobs in Jackson. Many areas that were once nice are higher crime now. The schools aren't spectacular. Downtown has been revitalized with murals and there's more nightlife or at least there was pre-pandemic. The roads are pretty bad and have been for years yet somehow the city builds several new million dollar traffic circles for aesthetic reasons. The shopping experience is largely big box stores and dollar stores. There are a couple nice county parks here and there are some good lakes and state parks within an hour's drive. If you golf, there's quite a few courses nearby. The cost of living is pretty low. The suburbs south and west of town are typically ok. I wouldn't want to raise a family anywhere within the city limits. Here again, areas a few miles south or west of town are fine. People are typically nice. Jackson is politically purple. The County is Republican. The city trends Democratic.
I've lived in Jackson Michigan for most of my life. I believe that Jackson is decent to live and be semi-comfortable. However, as a Black-African American living in Jackson, Michigan there are draw backs and not enough help promoting health and wellness to that particular group of individuals.
