We have a great community of people and lots of fun activities for everyone throughout the year. Neewollah is by far my favorite part of the year. Neewollah is a festival that Independence holds every year around Halloween. Neewollah involves a pageant, musical, 5k, 10k, concert, carnival, medallion hunt, and more. It is so much fun!
Independence is famous in south east Kansas for “Neewollah” (Halloween spelled backwards). This is the towns homecoming.. They have a Queen Neelah pageant where high school senior females can participate. When I was in beauty school I got to do the hair and makeup for the contestants. Aside from pageant, they have the Kiddy parade, where my children and I dress up in our Halloween costumes and participate. There is also a DooDah parade for adults to dress in their costumes and walk down Pennsylvania Ave. We always take the kids to the carnival, my personal favorite.
Aside from Neewollah, Independence has the best aquatic center around. This is placed right next to the Ralph Mitchell park and zoo. My children love the park, as did I when I was a child. There is a carousel, a mini train, and a mini-golf course. Independence is a nice place conveniently down the road from our house where we can take the kids to enjoy a family outing.

There is a very small zoo, park and aquatic center. That being said, that's it in town as far as entertainment. There is nothing for our teenagers to do here. Job growth is nonexistent. Most people, who are able to, drive 30 min to 1 hour to find jobs capable of supporting a family on. The schools are ok. There are a few administrators that will go above and beyond for your child. They are truly the heart of the schools. (There are also a few bad eggs) If you need good doctors you will be driving a couple hours. Going to Wal-Mart shows you how terrible the drug problem is here. It has definitely hit this community hard. Of course with drugs, comes crime. Crime is on the rise, specifically violent crime and robbery. I would say murder is pretty low. Definitely lock your doors and vehicles up. I don't think many choose to live here. I think people "end up" here.
