Crime & Safety
- Public Schools
Been living here since '93. This is an exceptionally safe and neighborly community. If you hit a snowbank in the winter, you may have to wait up to five minutes before someone with a tow strap stops to help pull you out. There is a bit of a social division between the university people and the locals but mostly it's a benign gap. The area is extremely safe; our kids rode their bikes wherever they wanted when they were growing up. There is wildlife: eagles, fox, bears, wolves, coyotes, porcupines and of course, deer all over the place much of the time--even in town occasionally.
I am currently a college student in Houghton, Michigan. It is a nice, quiet town in the Upper Peninsula with about half of the population being college students. Michigan Technological University is an excellent college in this town.
Houghton is a friendly town with great litle shops downtown. Downwind sports is a great bike/ski shop. The atmosphere is calm and friendly. There is a great downhill ski slope and has a great view of Houghton. In the winter its fun to ski on and hike in the summer and fall. The school system was very accomdating and provided the most current technology and curriculum.
