Houghton is the home of Michigan Tech, most of the diversity in our local area comes from students attending Tech. Houghton has many oppurtunities for enjoyment being located on the canal. Here, the local people take part in many activites: both down hill and cross country skiing, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, and catching their favorite local sports team. Hockey is a big part of the Upper Peninsula culture. The Houghton area is located in such a location that all four seasons are experienced year in and year out.

Been living here since '93. This is an exceptionally safe and neighborly community. If you hit a snowbank in the winter, you may have to wait up to five minutes before someone with a tow strap stops to help pull you out. There is a bit of a social division between the university people and the locals but mostly it's a benign gap. The area is extremely safe; our kids rode their bikes wherever they wanted when they were growing up. There is wildlife: eagles, fox, bears, wolves, coyotes, porcupines and of course, deer all over the place much of the time--even in town occasionally.
The people in Houghton are very friendly and always willing to help you. The housing market is not very good since most of the buildings are bought up by people to provide housing for college students. The owners then allow the buildings to go into disrepair, which can be an eye sore for some places. Overall though the schools are nice, parks are wonderful, and people are friendly.
