Over a year ago, my significant other and I moved into our first apartment in Holyoke - where we still currently reside. However, Holyoke is not new to me; I grew up in surrounding cities/towns in Western Massachusetts. My experience as a resident in Holyoke has been primarily pleasant - the cost of living is affordable, retail/grocery stores are plentiful, and the culture is expansive and diverse!
Holyoke has a lot of history and pride. It has an spirit that has been broken somewhat by poverty and insufficiency. Holyoke has more to offer than people think, but it is hard to find either due to parking, conditions of downtown, etc. If Holyoke had less crime and less condemned structures and more revitalization in its down town I think more people would move here. The schools seem to be getting better with the introduction of the dual language program. As far as night life is concerned- there is none! There aren't even good places to eat.
Holyoke is the city I was born and raised. As a child we lived in the Flats, the Flats was buildings that stood three stories high we lived on the second floor. All the families knew each other like one big extended family. The families would get together and have special events for the children. I remember one occasion a man came with horse I rode that horse around a big circle I was pretending to be a princess it was so exciting. When I was about six we moved out of the Flats and moved across town to south Holyoke/down town in a four story building we lived on the third floor my favorite aunty lived on the second floor with my favorite cousin and across from my aunt my god sisters family. I loved living in South Holyoke because my grandparents, aunties, cousins lived only walking distances and just like the Flats we all met up at the park and had family events. If I had to say what my over all experience was living in Holyoke, Massachusetts was family and life long friends.
