I love the small college town. There is plenty to do outdoors--many lakes, an extensive bike trail, public parks. The downtown remains small, but local business owners have sprung up new coffee places and deli shops that have made it a quaint place to visit. It is very rural, and so it has the issues any small town does with drug areas. However, the college maintains a strong influence on the town, economically and socially.
Although I used to want to leave, I have grown to love my little country town of Hillsdale. I really enjoy the many parks and nature settings that present throughout town, from the "Arb" by Hillsdale College, to hiking in Lost Nations, to strolling the ponds of Lewis Emery. It's a safe, quaint, family friendly environment that isn't too far of a drive to nearly larger cities and attractions, without the daily hustle and bustle. I wish there were more of a nightlife scene, especially since we are a college town. Breweries would be a good idea here, maybe a country bar, and Hillsdale college themed sports bar, just some ideas. Also, it would be great to have Recreation Center in town, not only the sports complex at the college, and to continue adding to the Baw Beese trail walking/biking path.
Hillsale is not a very good place for the night life, but we have an incredible fair that comes to town every year, and the 4th of July parade and fireworks are always nice as well. Hillsdale has many cute shops and the school is great.
