Living in Hillsboro has been an unpleasant experience. I grew up about forty five minutes away, and would come visit often. I enjoyed it, and thought it would be a good place to live. Unfortunately living here is very different, especially now. With Intel and Nike being huge corporations, the socioeconomic gap is rapidly expanding, not to mention gentrification. Secondly when you factor in COVID-19 it’s becoming harder to exist even here. So many displaced people, and jobs that don’t pay a living wage. While that is the state of our nation, it’s unfortunate that it’s happening in a town that most people move to because it’s more affordable. The police have been horrible for many years, and when it comes to this pandemic they’ve become worse than they ever have. Once I’m done with college and can earn a living wage I’ll be moving back into the country, I want to feel safe again.
Hillsboro is a safe, diverse, and enthusiastic community! Being the town I have grown up in most of my life I can say that with the utmost confidence this is a wonderful place to live. Although, one major thing I would like to see changed in the next ten to twenty years with Hillsboro is its attention to its education in public schools. Many schools just do not have the funds necessary to give the children of tomorrow the education they need. I believe the city of Hillsboro should focus its efforts on education and less on the development of new homes and facilities.
I’ve lived here all my life, and I can’t say there are many good things here. To start with the positives, it’s a generally safe area with a friendly community, and it is in very close proximity to both calm rural areas, and Portland. However, there are a lot of issues with Hillsboro. The air has been so polluted by intel and other manufacturers around here, that I’m nervous what it will do to my long term health. Lately, it smells as if there has been a chemical leak from one of the buildings, and it makes certain areas have a worrying chemical smell. Hillsboro also has no problem with letting intel make as much noise as they like, so sleeping is filled with the sounds of construction. Hillsboro will try and fool you with their ‘green city’ attitude, when it’s really anything but.
