Highland is what we call a "bedroom community" or "commuter town". There aren't many jobs or businesses in town, almost everyone commutes to a different city for their jobs. This city doesn't even have its own high school, movie theatre, or a formal dining restaurant. Basically, you come home, watch TV, go to bed, then go back to work.
Any sense of community revolves around the very large Immanuel Baptist Church. Otherwise people just keep to themselves. If a neighbor were to die due to a medical emergency or otherwise, no one on the block would know, let alone care. Everyone is too concerned about getting their Amazon packages.
Traffic safety doesn't exit--especially in West Highland. If one were to compile separate stats for west Highland traffic accidents, it would be one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in California.
Overall, this is a great town for those that want to be socially isolated, not community oriented, don't enjoy being out, or too busy working.

East highland is where you want to be. Born and raised here, the town has seen better days. This once sleepy town has become more populated within the past 10 years. 5 yrs ago you’d never see homeless, is now the norm. Most shopping is done in the Redlands area, with the exception of grocery stores. Home ownership and rent have drastically increased. 380-400k can easily be spent on purchasing a home & 1.6-2k on a monthly home rental. Most affluent typically travel for work unless they’re in the medical field/police work. Patton State Hospital lie silently on the out skirts of the town, has never been an issue among the community. The local officials are giving a face lift to the main parts of the town. The best schools in highland are actually Redlands school district (east highland) were the rest of the town is San Bernardino county school district. It’s not horrible here. We’re close to the mountains, 45min drive to the beach, and dining out is a favorite past time.
I have lived in this area for four years now, and I love it! Everything is local and convenient to where we live. I enjoy the area it is safe and friendly.
