I'm humored by some of the reviews here which extol Highland Park's "diversity." You can easily look up the demographic data to see that this simply isn't true. As a mixed-race family, we knew that would be counted as "the diversity." That doesn't bother us.
What does bother us is the general lack of warmth, openness, and friendliness. Our son greeted two boys around his age who live behind us and their response was "Why is he talking to us?" At first I thought they were just snooty young kids, but there was an adult listening to the whole conversation who didn't intervene. I thought we would meet other kids at the local park, but my son has often left in tears. The kids don't play together like they do in the city.
Before moving to HP, I was told by friends that we could expect this kind of atmosphere. I didn't believe it would be that bad. But it really is. I’ve lived in several different communities across the U.S.. This is one of the most closed-off places I've ever lived.

Highland Park is a great town with a diverse group of individuals who are there for one another. There are always different events in the community that are appropriate for every age group. There is something to do from strolling down to the lake to grabbing delicious food downtown Highland Park!
I have grown up in Highland Park my whole life and I can definitely say I feel safe here. Not very diverse and a bit expensive, but great school system!
