I recently moved out here about 3 months ago. I lived in a town about 20-25 minutes south of Highland and everything was far. I just came back from completing my associates degree in Illinois at Joliet Junior College. So moving to Highland was great because my current college is 10 minutes away and the expressway is right around the corner!

I'd like to see that the town becomes more open to expanding its local commerce and downtown area. It has a small downtown now with a bookstore, coffee shop, thrift store, and pizza place but they're are many places in the area that can be more wisely used.
I like that Highland is a close-knit community. Every year we have a summer festival and the whole town comes out to enjoy music, food, and the Fourth of July together. We also have a fireworks display every year for New Year's Eve. Just before midnight everyone gathers at our Main Square park and waits for midnight. Once its midnight, everyone's differences disappear and everyone, even strangers, celebrates the holiday together. It is one of my favorite memories of growing up here.
