Grew up here and loved it! It's a city with a small town feel. Great people, food, parks and architecture. They need to improve public transportation and provide more public activities and spaces downtown, but overall it's a pretty place. The university campus is gorgeous, growing and a catalyst in the community. Centrally located, not far from the mountains or the coast. Consistently voted one of the best places to live, probably due to the quality of life.
High Point was a rundown small college town with not much to do. A majority of the businesses were closed and/or rundown, meaning most entertainment had to be found on campus. The university did a good job at keeping students entertained, but it would be easy to get bored for many students. I personally didn't mind, being a part of the cross country team. We frequently travelled to surrounding areas for practice and competition purposes which provided an appreciated change of scenery. A favorite location to visit was just west in Winston Salem at Salem lake where we would frequent for our long runs many weeks. Not only was it a nice 7 mile loop lake to run around, there were also other things to stay busy outdoors such as biking, boating, fishing and many other things. As High Point university continues to build more and more around the actual city of High Point, it will be interesting to see how these things change.
Personally, I love High Point so much. I was born here and have lived here my whole life and gone to school in this wonderful city. There are not many activities to do actually in High Point, but there is so much to do in the neighboring cities. The restaurants are all very good and many of them have been around for a long time. It has a great lake, Oak Hollow Lake, that you can catch some monster fish in or just go out and spend time on the water. The schools in this city are amazing schools, both public and private alike. I would recommend this city for anyone who is considering moving to High Point because it is growing and modernizing. For example, last year we got our very own professional baseball team named the High Point Rockers and the games are very interesting to go to. Last but not least, we are one of the biggest furniture cities in the country and people from all over the world come here twice a year for the furniture market.
