If you don't have kids, don't care for amenities, want to own a brand new condo, all while having an ok commute, Hayward is for you. Hayward is the ultimate Bay Area compromise. You can find some pockets of Hayward that are peaceful and very "ok," though most of Hayward is what I'd politely call "rough." Violent crime is mostly centered around these areas, though every now and then it bleeds into the safer pockets.
There aren't very many restaurants or amenities. It's a fine place if you are ok with mediocre food with no ambiance. If you want to enjoy a nice dinner with fancy cocktails, well, good luck. The good news is, all of the other cooler Bay Area cities are only 20-40 minutes away on BART. It really helps keep those fitness goals up. Close them rings! Go get that summer body by walking BART.
Overall, Hayward is a good place for DINKs trying to own property. It's a great starter city so if you can live with everything else, go for it!

Overall,
Hayward is conveniently located city for commuting to high paying jobs in the silicon valley, but the schools are horrible and there are heavy crime areas scattered throughout the city.
The Southland mall is terrible and very seedy. The downtown is very run down and there aren't a lot of good restaurants inside city limits. After living in the city for 28 years, I would say it hasn't gotten worse but its not getting better. The city is perfect for people who want a cheaper place to live, without kids, do not go out eat, and need to commute to Silicon Valley.
It is a very diverse city.

I've lived here for approximately 10 years and it is an up-and-coming neighborhood. With close access to many major cities in the bay, it is a good distance from the airport with good access to the BART. There are two libraries located on either end of the town and include a great park and proximity access to parks for good outdoors healthy habits if you so choose.
Schools close by include Pre-k to 12th and various schools to choose from. There are charters, public, and privates all within access of this neighborhood.
There have also been many recent projects working on aesthetics and safety. Many murals have been put up, new street lights, and sidewalk implements. With the rise and continuous add-on of new residential buildings, it is clear to see that Hayward is becoming more and more of an established place for families and workers. There is also an increase in supermarkets, and more popping up across the city.
