Even in town you have the feel of living out in the country as there's no crazy or overbearing city ordinances. The people I have met for the most part are very friendly, as tends to be the case in the majority of small towns. It's a relatively short commute to bigger surrounding cities, Tyler is approximately 30 minutes away and Longview is about 40. The school system in Hawkins Texas is amazing as far as student achievement and clubs/activities offered. The town itself is unfortunately lacking in diversity (mostly caucasion), and being a small town in East Texas there is a bit of racism. There is a decent amount of shopping opportunities as there is a Brookshire's, Fred's, and Dollar Store in town; I wish that there was a Wal-Mart in town though as the closest one is about 30 minutes away.
Review Hawkins
Hawkins is a very small, homely town in which I have stayed my entire life. Many elderly folk take residence near here, because the peaceful, piney woods and lakes allow for a great retirement community. With such a fantastic feel of nature's glory everywhere you go, the countryside allows for a strong connection to Mother Earth. Everyone is friendly and close knit in this small town community. It is isolated and a little far from the bigger towns, but it provides for privacy and solitude.
While the town over all is a generally nice place it has all the downsides of any small town, especially for someone who is unable to drive. Anything bigger than the local store is about 35 to 45 minutes away. There is no transportation, which is expected in a small town, but a downside for me as I can't go anywhere without help then, limiting my independence. There is little variety of culture, something I miss having since I grew up in the Dallas area, as well as no good places to go out and eat or socialize. If you want to do anything like that you again have to drive 35 to 45 minutes or more. Add that all together plus the little to no job opportunities in town, all of them being the 35 to 45 minute drive away. It leads me to give Hawkins life 2 stars.
