I personally have loved residing in Harrison. It is a town where although it has a big population every member is connected one way or another! Schooling here is great and there are many opportunities for every grade level. Additionally, should one live in West Harrison there is a good sense of safety. West Harrison particularly is more of its own town but everyone is friendly and the children are well taken care of! Additionally, commuting through town is easy!
This is a great place to live in a nature friendly and family friendly setting. We moved to Harrison NY in July 2020 when I got posted to NY with my UN HQ job. Having lived in multiple countries as UN staff member, we were looking for a town with a credible public school system and international orientation. Harrison school system provided us a great option with its IB programme, lots of greenery, woods and animals. Above all, we loved the community we got exposed to. Overall safety is well experienced by us a family in the last three years. Having lived as a tenant in our first year, we ended up buying our house in second year. If you are looking for a good quality suburban life in a good school district with international outlook, Harrison certainly ticks many boxes.
Harrison is ok. Schools are very well rated. It's very safe. Many commute via train to Manhattan. Some commerce by the train station but nothing special. Restaurants and venues in neighboring towns are a quick 1-2 train stops away. There are a number of playground/parks but almost zero natural green space. Not pedestrian friendly. Half of the town has very small lots, multifamilies, & street parking. The other half is all million dollar homes. Cost of living is very high. Significant litter in parks and on streets. Very little diversity. As far as a "small town" feel it's true that many people do know each other. Although I would suspect that's because a large portion of the community appears rather insular. Multiple generations of families in town. That's about where the small town feel ends. People have been very friendly & nice to us, but based on personal observances, and 2nd hand stories, we do not believe it would have been the same if we weren't a white heterosexual couple.
