I've lived in Harrisburg for 6 years. There are pros and there are cons.
Pros: Close proximity to 485 and convenient to Uptown without being in Mecklenburg County. Small town feel, no big box stores. Plenty of diversity. Nice neighborhoods and good schools. Good sports programs for kids. Close to plenty of grocery stores and auto parts stores. Good parks/splash pad/library.
Cons: Close to University area where crime is a problem, we've had our cars broken into multiple times and banks have been robbed here. Diversity is a plus, however there is a large non-American population. It can feel isolating when most of your neighborhood speaks another language and celebrates non-American holidays/festivals. There is mostly only fast food here. Nicer restaurants and shopping are a 20-30 minute drive. The major downfall is the lack of school choice. There are no private schools in Harrisburg and only one charter school. The closest private schools are in Concord or University, quite a drive.

Fantastic town that is close to a big city, but not too close. Plenty of entertainment in the surrounding areas. Schools are fantastic, however they are overcrowded. There are more and more houses being built, which overtime is going to cause more crowding.
