I'm a Houstonian, yet have lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 14 years and lived in several places yet Harlingen is the best. Harlingen is the only town in the Rio Grande Valley that reminds me of home. I grew up in the inner city of Houston minutes from downtown and Harlingen offer's that same feeling with it's one way streets and mixture of residential and commercial. Harlingen is also very diverse city and family friendly. There's always monthly event's like art night, free concerts, market day's, etc. Most of all the City officials take pride in always enhancing and expanding the town. The school district is dedicated on providing many educational opportunities like dual enrollment, early college, etc. Overall great experience!
Harlingen has been voted one of the most affordable cities in the USA. The local school district is expanding with the creation of specialized schools (i.e. fine arts and stem academies). Housing is expanding with new suburbs and houses all over the city. There is plenty to do here, especially birdwatching!
The reason why I think Harlingen is a very good place live because it's affordable. If you don't believe me ask the residents living in Harlingen. They are making colleges cheaper for kids and expanding creation of schools for children. Now, Harlingen has been expanding in there shopping center. This means there is now plenty of places to go and you'll never be bored. Another beneficial thing about living in Harlingen is you have other cities next to you. I recently got back from visiting Bottineau, North Dakota. I didn't like it at Bottineau because they had completely nothing there. They only had a Walmart to go shopping and if you wanted to eat Olive Garden you had to travel one hour and thirty minutes. The nearest SAM'S was 3 hours away only one way. After this experience it made me realized that living in Harlingen is not as bad as I thought it was. This experience made me realized to be more appreciative of my hometown.
