Caution: Not bicycle or pedestrian friendly! The Town extends from SUNY Albany to the Helderberg Escarpment. "Nightlife" is mostly between the SUNY campus and Crossgates Mall. Developers are chopping up open spaces west of 20 Mall. The Pinebush is a key natural asset, butthere are NO BICYCLE trails and few pedestrian friendly areas in the Town, which hasn't availed itself of NY’s "Safe-Paths-To-School" funds. Instead it seems to give developers latitude to mine the pine covered sand hills that characterize the area's natural geography. Traffic is growing and greenspaces are disappearing.

Overall: Schools are great; diverse and filled with talented students and teachers. The Parks & Recreation jewel is Tawasentha Park, a 1 sq. mile park with trails, athletic facilities and a performing arts center. About 2 sq. miles of Pinebush Preserve resides in the Town. As long as the family is OK with driving to these recreational facilities and to schools, the outdoor assets are good.

The town of Guilderland is a nice area. The best thing about it is the transportation. I live near Crossgates Mall, and it's a very central place where you can walk to the grocery store, a few restaurants or the mall. Once you're at Crossgates you can talk the bus to downtown Albany, Greyhound Bus Station, Amtrak Train Station and other towns nearby such as Troy and Schenectady. However, during the winter, the crossroads don't get paved making it very difficult to get to public transportation. If you're looking to go out on the town, there's not much of nightlife, however. Most of that stuff is in Troy or Schenectady, and maybe Downtown Albany. There are a few bars in the area though.
I really like Guilderland! It is a safe community and everything is close by. The traffic isn't bad at all and you are close enough to the city to get get delivery and have fun! The schools are also very nice. I would say this is a very family friendly community. Cost of living is a little more expensive, but that probably has to do with why it is such a nice area. Jobs are also relatively easy to find because you are so close to the city center. There are a few nice churches in the area as well.
