First is to correct the ill-informed and unfair characterizations of this town by some others who have posted here. Greenfield is a city, the county seat, and it has the positives and negatives of cities. Drug problems are everywhere, and it's unfair to single us out like some have done. We don't put on facades like our supposedly hip neighbors to the north and south. But we have most of what they brag about, like a vibrant music scene, the arts, and great food choices. We were named one of Massachusett's Cultural Districts. We have the most cooperative worker-owned businesses than probably any town or city in the area. There's a lot of easily accessible outdoor recreation, and
we have a great range of shopping choices, both in town and nearby, and one of the last true independent department stores, Wilsons.

Greenfield used to be better. Unfortunately there are a lot of homeless and begging right now. I feel bad but I believe this is mostly due to the growing drug epidemic. Thankfully they did open a new rehab center! Unfortunately there is a full hotel filled with the homeless that Springfield rents out and they are usually begging at the Big Y next to it.
I grew up in this town and it has changed a lot in the past 21 years so I suppose I am a little bias. However, I can honestly say that there are large negative factors as well as positive factors in this little area of western Mass. Greenfield looks beautiful on the surface with its Saturday morning farmers market, quaint downtown and poets seat tower. However, as Anthony Bourdain pointed out in his episode on Massachusetts, we have quite the opioid problem as well as a homeless problem. I think as a community we are doing a lot to take care of this problem including building a new halfway house. We have many opportunities here including the Greenfield community college which has the Outdoor Leadership program as well as a great nursing program. I did not go to Greenfield High school but have heard it's facilities and faculty have improved a lot the past couple of years. We have a movie theater, YMCA, and a few cool hiking trails.
