Many Mom and Pop shops still exist although the bigger stores have been squeezing some out since I've lived here. The number of big box stores has increased. Also the number of upscale retail shops and restaurants have increased.

Everything is pretty much available in this area the exceptions would be if you need specialty items such as specially fitted shoes. Even then you could find your needs fulfilled within a reasonable driving distance.

There are many types of restaurants and quite a few of the chain variety. However, the chain restaurants take quite a while to come here it seems and then they only last for a few years at best. Many ethnic places are also available.
There are good jobs if you are in the industries that are located here such as pharma, biotech, medical and research. Otherwise it can be a challenge. You can make more money if you are willing to work closer to or within New York city.
