After looking at several areas in NJ, we chose to buy in Glen Ridge. Glad we did. Housing is competitive and property taxes are quite high - but taken as a whole package (quality of environment, access to NYC, schools, friendly neighbors, safety, access to nature) it's been worth it. Diversity is also improving as new families move in.
Community is small and quaint but at times it can be a very small, constricting bubble. In schools especially, everybody knows everybody, and that means that with any taint of originality can make your high school years truly uncomfortable. Since there is very little diversity in the town and most of the inhabitants are quite wealthy, some individuals are prejudiced and small minded. Otherwise, the school system, while at times formatted around the wealthier student body, is great and the town itself is pretty.
Glen Ridge is a very pretentious place. The town itself is very pretty and quaint, the schools are good and the surrounding towns have great culture and opportunities. However, Glen Ridge is a competitive, gossipy, judgmental place that lacks tolerance and acceptance for those who are different.
