Gilroy, California is a small town right in the middle of everything. To the north of Gilroy, you will hit the Bay Area and the cities whereas to the south of Gilroy, you’ll hit small towns just like it. To the west, you’ll get Santa cruz and the beaches where as to the east you get the valley. I grew up in Gilroy since forever and so it go from a really small town with little to no traffic to 2023 Gilroy where there’s traffic everywhere now. There used to be lots of land untouched filled with wildlife, now there’s homes built exactly like one another. I liked old gilroy where homes weren’t crazy expensive and rent wasn’t worth an arm and a leg. Where there wasn’t nonstop construction being built for homes of people moving to gentrify neighborhoods that were once affordable for minorities like me. 2023 Gilroy breaks my heart especially since the town I used to love, now is the reason for my current want of moving away to another small town away that reminds me of the town i loved.
Growing up in Gilroy it was the perfect place, I always thought I would move away to college, enjoy real life then settle back in Gilroy once I decided to settle down with a family. To see what it has become is very disappointing, all the beauty is gone, replaced with million dollar housing as far as the eye can see. Santa Teresa driving to Gavilan used to be so beautiful, now it’s just house after house. Not to mention the new breed of people moving into Gilroy leave much to be desired it is very Trumpy as compared to the community I grew up in. Unfortunately all of my friends have since moved away, including myself and my family as Gilroy is not what it used to be, the costs are through the roof and quality of life is greatly diminished.
Although Gilroy has beautiful views of the mountains, the once sparse, farmland community is being overbuilt and will lose much of its character.
It is the small town with false advertisement almost everything is expensive and there are just two or three entertaining things going on. If you are just passing by just keep going don’t bother stopping by this lame town. I grew up here and it 100% sucked which is why I moved out of this boring town.
Gilroy is a small town containing of a community that is forever by each other's side whenever anyone needs it. We tend to keep each other safe and if at any point something were to go wrong, we would make it right the best way we can. In this town, if you see someone once, you'll see them over and over again, if it's at a restaurant, the store, the library, etc. Having a job, especially at a food establishment, makes it so that you see a lot of the residents here and you make a lot of friendships while doing so. Outside of my job, I would see people, such as at a grocery store, and they would ask me if I work at the place I work at which shows how much of a community we have and how we all remember each other in an instant. Everyone treats people with kindness even on our off days. Gilroy is not only a town, it's a community.
Gilroy is a wonderful city filled with lots of culture and garlic! Living here for more than 10 years, I seem to find something new about the city fairly often which is amazing to me.
Gilroy is a decent city. It feels safe in my opinion and I struggle to think of things I would change.
Nice, quiet, small town for the most part. Definite income disparity creeping in along with lack of resources to help those in need. Some are working to make change real and keep the downtown area alive, but will have to wait and see.
i love the smell of Garlic, just entering the city make me want to have garlic in my food. the people here in Gilroy are truly blessed and nice to be in a small town with all the resources they have. this city has the best groceries stores and parks, also having a great amusement park at the exit of Gilroy heading towards watsonville.
Gilroy is an amazing community. Everyone is friendly and it is easy to get to know others. I enjoy going on walks around town. I have never had any problems regarding my safety. My favorite part of gilroy is the festivals we have. The Garlic festival is a good way to try new, amazing food while being around others. I especially love gilory because most of my family lives here. Gilroy is a pretty small community, so it is easy to navigate around.
Grew up in Gilroy. Too expensive to live in. The high schools shouldn't be so far from most of the housing areas. Could do better in sidewalks. There should be more bus stops/bus routes. Or more frequent bus times. More crosswalks.
Gilroy is a small, quiet town with very little nightlife. I would recommend this town for anyone starting a family or for anyone with more conservative values.
Gilroy is a growing city, its changed from a small farming town to a more urban city. There are a fair amount of privately owned businesses and restaurants as well as commercial ones. There is a small amusement park just on the outskirts of town that is quaint and perfect for young families with small children. The only major downside to Gilroy is the cost of living there is quite high considering how far it is from any of the major cities such as San Jose and San Francisco but there is a commuter train in the center of town that goes to both major cities.
Gilroy is an amazing town with it's quirks. It is homey, however you must stay on safer parts of it. It has amazing attractions like the mall, theme park, and garlic festival.
I was born and raised in Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world, and I enjoyed many things about my life there. The climate and relation between the geography and local agriculture was an enjoyable mix. By this, I mean that Gilroy is in the Central Coast where it is only thirty minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. Basically every afternoon of the year up until about mid-day, Gilroy has an influx of coastal clouds float in and coastal air that is very fresh and cool! While, Gilroy's garlic identity is noticeable through it's heavy agriculture in the surrounding areas of the city. In the summer nights, it is common to notice a strong scent of garlic fill the air -- especially in east Gilroy -- which is likely coming from the food processing plants. I've always enjoyed being outside in the summer and experiencing the rapid cooling effects of the ocean breezes and the beautiful scent of garlic.
I think Gilroy can definitely improve it's public transportation and community engagement.

I moved here from San Jose to escape the city. It's a sweet town with cheerful, kind people. Our home is rural but use door dash if we want restaurant food delivered. Safeway delivers groceries as well. Has city amenities without the crowds. Lovely vineyards and a short drive over the hill to the coast (20 minutes). Ideal climate with winds from the Pacific kicking in on those hot summer days. Feel very safe with responsive police who care about the community. Very diverse with Whites and Hispanics but very respectful of everyone. Hispanics greatly enrich the culture, very family focused and pretty conservative. Whites are mostly middle class commuters. Google bought crop land in Gilroy.
Negatives are home costs and property tax. Garlic smell is seasonal, usually at the end of summer when crop is replaced. Funny seeing fields of discarded garlic. Soil is rich with long growing season. Good water.

The people in gilroy are very nice. Downtown is filled with life on the weekends. We have just about everything here, multiple hiking trails, numerous resturants with exquisite food.
