I have lived in the Gaston/Swansea area since I was 3 months old. I love the quiet and the isolation from busy city life. Being in these small towns gives you a very close connection with nature and wildlife, and at times the town can be a very beautiful place to be. Small town life also gives you the advantage of feeling like one big family. Everybody knows everybody, and while there are conflicts we can usually manage to get along. Unfortunately, it is a very poor, small town in a very poor school district. The schools do the best that they can with what they have, but the poverty of our district prohibits our public school officials from providing the best education possible to the children of Gaston and Swansea.
It's a small town with great people. Neighbors help each other in time of need, without asking and sometimes just because. I've seen a lot of people "pay it forward" and the chain reaction was phenomenal. It's rare to see a community get together for different events, support one another and display the amount of human compassion that I have witnessed here. It's a excellent place to live, start a family or a great place to relocate or retire. It's a hole on the map kinda town but makes South Carolina a great place.
Been living in Gaston for about 5 years and my family and I love it. I grew up in the country so I feel right at home in the Gaston area. We are not far from anything as both I77 and I26 are minutes away from our house. I recommend anyone that likes quiet, safe neighborhoods to migrate to the Gaston.
