What I like about living here in Gary is the cost of living is low, living so close to Lake Michigan and the short drive to the night life in Chicago!
I would like to see more retail establishments in town, better school system and a high level of community involvement and investment.

I live in an old subdivision of Gary, IN near the beach that used to be a town called Miller. It's a quaint little beach community where all the locals who have been around awhile call themselves "The Mayor".
For such a tight little community it seems most of the residents prefer to stay active in local political affairs and other functions. Being that many people have owned beach homes here for many years, there are less children than in the more populated area of greater Gary, IN. However, most of the residents in the greater area are lower income families. Which is completely understandable as I have seen the same "city-sickness" in many states where there is evidence of a once thriving African-American community that is simply dilapidated and forgotten. Is saddening to see all the crumbled houses and businesses and like many others (for their own reasons) I try to avoid it altogether if I can.
The neighborhood in Gary in which I live it pretty safe. Although, there are parts of Gary that aren't. Most of the streets in Gary have many potholes. I feel that our local government could do so much with Gary. For example fix the bad streets and create places to draw business here to raise money.
