Several years ago a medium-security prison was built within Galesburg. Ever since, prisoners from Chicago have been moved to the prison in Galesburg and this caused their families to follow them here as well to let them visit their loved one periodically. Now, as more and more criminals are released, they choose to stay rather than leave, causing crime to increase in the Galesburg area. Galesburg has areas that are dangerous, and there are several murders here a year. I've seen men carrying pistols in the back of their jeans walking down the street, and I have also seen drug deals out in the open. Living in this area is not nearly how it used to be, and most people here believe it will only continue to get worse.

There is very little to do for entertainment in Galesburg, we have a mall that is mostly closed down, one store that closed was Sears, an anchor store. There a few successful businesses in Galesburg that aren't in the food service. Walmart recently built a superstore just off the interstate in Galesburg, and with it came the construction of a shopping area around it with stores like Rue 21, Radioshack, and Verizon.
If you want a good job around Galesburg, you either work in construction, work for the government, or work for BNSF. The unemployment rate in Galesburg is horrendous and has been for quite some time. A lot of people abuse government aid and sell their aid for cash. Galesburg is simply not a good place to find a job, and it is not a growing community.
